Air NZ apologises

Nearly 30 years after an Air New Zealand jet slammed into Mt Erebus in Antarctica, killing all 257 on board, the airline has apologised to families of the dead this morning.
The Air New Zealand DC-10 was on a sightseeing flight when it hit the mountain November 28, 1979. The airline said today's apology was to take care of some of the "many of the gaps and failings that occurred in the days, months and years after November 28, 1979".

Thirty years after Captain Jim Collins died at Mt Erebus, his widow and four daughters are faced with having to decide which one of them will fly to the site of New Zealand's worst air disaster.
Air New Zealand has drawn a ballot to decide which five families of the 257 people who died in the Antarctica crash on November 28, 1979, will be represented at the memorial service on the 30th anniversary.
One seat had been allocated to the family of Mr Collins, but his daughter Kathryn Carter said they were yet to decide who would go.

Air NZ to apologise to Erebus families

Air New Zealand will say sorry to the families of those killed in the Erebus disaster as part of the 30th anniversary commemorations. The apology will be the first to families of the 257 people who died when the airline's DC-10 crashed into Mt Erebus in Antarctica on November 28, 1979, during a sightseeing flight. It is understood chief executive Rob Fyfe will use the unveiling of a sculpture at the airline's head office in Auckland next Friday to apologise for the way the families were treated after the accident. But he would not go as far as apologising for the accident itself or the subsequent controversial investigations.

Erebus next of kin to go to Antarctica

Air New Zealand will continue with plans to take five next-of-kin of those who died in the Erebus tragedy to Antarctica, despite objections from some family members. A proposal to take the families involved in the Erebus tragedy to Antarctica for the 30th anniversary on November 28 this year was put up for consultation last month.
In a decision released publicly yesterday, Air New Zealand said it had been in touch with families who expressed interest and had begun the process of formally applying to the Government for access to the memorial cross at Mt Erebus.
